A roadmap of roadmaps to a modernized digital grid

Is your utility suffering from Shiny Object Syndrome? Did you start upgrading one system only to realize that some core inputs you thought would be ready from another department aren’t planned for roll-out until funding is received in the next rate period? Are you advancing your system observability with more sensors, but lack the data analytics to provide actionable intelligence?

These are all common pitfalls of T&D utilities striving to stay current, but without an overall plan of how all the integrated pieces fit together. Hatch spent the last year supporting an integrated transmission and distribution utility with ~1.5m customers in bringing together multiple strategic initiatives into a single Grid Modernization Roadmap that identified 250+ individual projects with almost 100 dependencies to be delivered over the next 13 years.

Hatch grid modernization leaders will present the approach used to bring together the utility’s vision and mission to create an integrated roadmap that was supported by all key functional teams and the utility’s executive team and is a critical tool to be used in its upcoming rate application. The approach included understanding what their current maturity level was across 75+ subdomains and working with an integrated team to establish the desired capabilities over multiple time horizons. The level of detail included commentary on the technologies required to implement each initiative, the people skills needed to plan, the change management practices needed to increase buy-in, and the processes required to execute the utility’s visions for a modernized digital grid.
