Mitre Gate Rehabilitation/Replacement

The Welland Canal provides a vital navigation channel for vessels traveling between Lakes Erie and Ontario. The present canal has been in service for nearly 95 years and contains approximately twenty-five pairs of mitre gates used for lock operations. The largest mitre gates are 82-ft tall and each gate weighs almost 1 million pounds. After this period of service, the St Lawrence Seaway Management Corp. (SLSMC) must embark on a long-term program, which may include rehabilitation and/or replacement. Join us while Jonathan describes the existing mitre gates, recent project work, and potential plans.
