Biography

Bryan Karney has a bachelor of applied science degree and a PhD in civil engineering, both from the University of British Columbia. Bryan has been a professor of civil engineering at the University of Toronto since 1987 and was the associate dean of the Cross Disciplinary Programs office in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science from 2009 to 2021. Bryan is also the founding principal of HydraTek with more than thirty-five years of experience in providing comprehensive hydraulic and hydraulic transient consulting services on a wide range of fluid systems, including water, wastewater, storm, oil, gas, and jet fuel. Currently he is the director of the undergraduate emphasis on sustainable energy and the director of the graduate emphasis on hydropower.   

Bryan has spoken and written widely on subjects related to water resource systems, energy issues, hydrology, climate change, optimization, engineering education, and engineering ethics. He was associate editor for the American Society of Civil Engineer’s Journal of Hydraulic Engineering from 1993 to 2005 and an associate editor for the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research’s Journal of Hydraulic Research from 2016 to 2023. He has written numerous papers and has been awarded several teaching and research awards.
