Derek Vanstone

Global Director, Government and Regulatory Affairs, Hatch

Biography

Derek is a problem solver—a global public affairs, government relations, and legal and regulatory affairs professional with a track record of achieving regulatory change and project wins.

A lawyer, Derek practiced for several years as a commercial litigator before moving into the Canadian federal government, serving as the chief of staff to the minister of finance and as the deputy chief of staff to the prime minister. He then served as an executive with Air Canada before joining Hatch. From all of this, Derek understands public policy and tries to help public and private sector clients navigate policy, regulatory, and project challenges.

Currently, Derek works to represent Hatch’s interests with governments in the regions where we operate and assist Hatch clients in their interactions with governments, communities, and regulators. He works across all Hatch business units—mining and minerals, energy, and infrastructure—and has deep experience in the analysis of public policy and its impact on project development.
